Algebra 1 visited The Boro Baking Co. on February 1st, as part of a project on Systems of Linear Inequalities. The students interviewed the owner, Jen Clifford ’02, and learned about the various mathematics that she works with every day in running her bakery business. With this, the students also recorded information such as costs to make certain bakery goods, the prices for which they sell for, and the required quantities of each item needed for daily sales. By having access to this information, the students were later able to write and graph linear inequalities to determine the best price for selling each of the products, and to decide the quantity of these products that will provide the greatest profit. This field trip and project provided an authentic way on how the concepts learned in our class are used in a business situation. Furthermore, it allowed the students to appreciate mathematics by seeing how it is applied in the real world.
