Thirty-one Moultonborough Academy (MA) high school students participated in a full-day, student-led Data Analysis Retreat at Plymouth State University on Thursday, January 19, 2023. The Retreat was led by eight of the MA Getting to “Y” (GTY) student leaders: Leah Haskins, Grace Burton, Claire Neely, Abby Bryant, Owen Natusch, Brendan Anderson, Sarah Smith, and Luna Natusch, with support from their program advisors, Heather Nelson, Director of Counseling Services, and Carrie Fair, MA Library Media Specialist.
GTY is an action research program that creates an opportunity for adolescents to take part in a thoughtful and informed analysis of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) data. The GTY student leaders engaged their peers in a variety of activities including recognizing the various assets within their community, analyzing data sets from the YRBS, identifying strengths and concerns in the data, discussing root causes, and brainstorming possible solutions. The student participants offered valuable insight and ideas that will help the student leaders formulate their action plans. The GTY Student Leaders also made sure there was plenty of fun too, with icebreakers and energizer games throughout the day! The next step for the GTY student leaders is to facilitate a virtual Community Dialogue Event to share the asset map they created, to share the YRBS data analysis results and seek community member input, to expand the root cause analysis by including community member input, and to include community member ideas in crafting solutions and action plans.
