January in Physical Education

PE in January: 4th and 5th graders participated in a cross grade level Pillo Polo (floor hockey) tournament. Students competed in a tournament between their own class first. The winning team from each class moved on to the final four to compete for the coveted Pillo Polo trophy. The championship team gets to bring the trophy back to their classroom where it lives for the rest of the year. Students also had the opportunity to participate in three different jobs while they were not playing. The three jobs were, officiating, scorekeeping, and the game clock timer. At the end of the tournament each class voted for their peers to earn the “sportsmanship award” and the “heart and hustle award.” We talked about how having good sportsmanship and a good work ethic is more important than winning the trophy.

Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade participated in a couple different units throughout the month. They had a chance to learn about the PE parachute which is always a fan favorite. The parachute reinforces a controlled body and teamwork. Students also spent some time learning about a couple of different body weight exercises that they can perform anywhere to make their bodies stronger and healthier. These exercises were squats, push-ups, sit-ups, and jogging/running/walking. Thank you Mr. Hurley for all the fun this month!
